SAP Cloud ALM – What Comes After Solution Manager?

For many companies, SAP Solution Manager 7.2 is the invisible heart of their IT landscape: It manages implementation projects, monitors operations, and forms the backbone of application lifecycle management.

With official maintenance ending on December 31, 2027, thousands of companies now face the question: How can they successfully transition to SAP Cloud ALM – without jeopardizing ongoing projects and without simply copying the ALM concept 1:1 where a fresh start would be the better choice?

What is SAP Cloud ALM and how does it differ from Solution Manager?

SAP Cloud ALM is the official successor to SAP Solution Manager for Application Lifecycle Management, replacing a platform that has formed the backbone of SAP project management for many companies for over a decade. It offers an intuitive platform for the entire application lifecycle – from the implementation of new SAP solutions to the intelligent operation of the system landscape.

A key economic advantage: SAP Cloud ALM is already included at no additional licensing cost for customers with SAP Enterprise Support (Cloud Editions). While Solution Manager is operated on-premises and carries complexity that has grown over decades, Cloud ALM is designed from the ground up for the cloud era: leaner, more intuitive, and with native support for modern DevOps methods and intelligent monitoring.

How does the transition with abat work? The three phases

Phase 1: Analysis & Transition Assessment

We analyze your existing Solution Manager landscape: Which processes and content run through SolMan? Which content can be migrated directly, and which needs to be redesigned? Direct migration paths exist for key elements such as test cases and process documentation. Even where fully automated migration isn’t available – such as with Focused Build – we develop a tailor-made successor process.

Phase 2: Implementation – Introducing SAP Cloud ALM

We configure Cloud ALM to ensure you have maximum transparency and comprehensive documentation right up to go-live: requirements management, process documentation, and test management integrate seamlessly. Where manual testing previously took weeks, test automation ensures that releases can be approved faster and with less effort.

Phase 3: Operations – Detect-to-Correct During Live Operations

During ongoing operations, we ensure the stability of your SAP system landscape through a proactive “Detect-to-Correct” approach: Intelligent monitoring detects anomalies in systems, integrations, and business processes early on and resolves many of them automatically. With abat, you use SAP Cloud ALM as a “single point of truth” for your IT operations.

How far along are you with your SAP Cloud ALM transition?

Start with a free assessment: We analyze your current Solution Manager usage and, in an initial consultation, show you which migration path is best suited to your situation and how much time you have left. Pragmatic, experienced, and straight to the point.

FAQs: Frequently asked questions about SAP Cloud ALM

Now. Experience shows that complex landscapes with extensive Solution Manager usage require significant lead time to ensure the transition can be implemented in a meaningful and structured manner – and there is less time left until the end of 2027 than it seems. Those who start early have room to maneuver and can approach the migration in an orderly manner. Those who wait will migrate under pressure.

After support ends on December 31, 2027, you will no longer receive security patches or regular updates for SAP Solution Manager 7.2. This means a growing security and compliance risk – a serious problem, especially in regulated industries such as life sciences or defense & security. Those who start planning now will have sufficient time for an orderly, low-risk transition.

The paid Extended Maintenance option extends support through the end of 2030 – but only for customers with existing Business Suite 7 contracts and only for a limited scope of functionality. It buys time, but does not solve the fundamental problem: Cloud ALM will continue to evolve through 2030, while Solution Manager will not. Those who do not plan now will migrate later under pressure.

No, if you use SAP Enterprise Support (Cloud Editions), SAP Cloud ALM is included at no additional license cost. This is a benefit that many SAP customers are not yet aware of. During the initial consultation, abat will check whether your existing SAP contract already includes free access to Cloud ALM.

SAP provides direct migration paths for key content such as test cases and process documentation. There is no fully automated migration for Focused Build, but Cloud ALM offers a tailored successor process that seamlessly continues project and change structures. abat evaluates your specific Solution Manager usage and develops the optimal migration path for you.

Detect-to-Correct is the proactive monitoring concept in SAP Cloud ALM Operations: The system detects anomalies in system landscapes, integrations, and business processes early on – even before they impact operations – and resolves many of them automatically. The result is fewer outages, shorter response times, and overall more stable SAP operations.

Yes, parallel operation is possible and recommended to ensure a seamless transition without operational downtime. abat structures the transition so that both systems run in parallel during a defined transition period before Solution Manager is fully replaced. This minimizes risk and provides time for testing and training.
