What do you do as an SAP consultant?

As an SAP consultant, you support companies in implementing, optimising and maintaining various SAP software solutions. In other words, you are an IT specialist for SAP software.

What is SAP?

SAP (Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung) is a German multinational software company that specialises in the development of enterprise software for managing business processes and customer relationships. The software is often used by companies to, for example, increase operational efficiency, optimise financial reporting, manage supply chain management or improve customer service. The SAP software consists of various modules that cover different business functions such as finance, logistics, human resources and customer relationship management.

How do you become an SAP consultant?

There are various ways to start a career as an SAP consultant.

Many SAP consultants have previously completed a university education, for example in computer science, business informatics, business administration or engineering. They have usually acquired basic IT skills such as programming, database administration and system analysis. These prerequisites form a good basis for joining a company as an SAP consultant.

Next, you will learn how to use SAP software on the basis of your training and acquire SAP certificates. You can specialise in various SAP modules and functions, such as Financial Accounting (FI), Controlling (CO), Sales and Distribution (SD), Materials Management (MM), Extended Warehouse Management (EWM), Production Planning (PP), Quality Management (QM) and Transport Management (TM). A certificate in one or more modules will further emphasise your skills.

To learn these skills and gain practical experience, you can apply for internships, trainee programmes or junior positions in companies that use SAP software or offer SAP consulting. As a career changer, you also have the opportunity to enter the SAP environment as a consultant through further training.

Once you have started your career as an SAP consultant, continuous further training is of great importance. It is particularly important to be informed about the latest developments and trends in the SAP environment, to attend regular training courses and to renew certifications.
